PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL) announced an agreement with Segetis to explore the development of bio-derived plasticizers for use in targeted petroleum and bio-based polymers.
PolyOne is working with Segetis in response to customer demand for more sustainable product offerings. The joint agreement will help to leverage Segetis’ proprietary levulinic ketal technology, which is based on renewable, sustainable resources, in the development of plasticizers, solvents, and modifiers for the targeted polymers. Initial developments will be tested in the US, but all resulting technology platforms will become globally available.
The agreement will combine Segetis’ technology with PolyOne’s compounding technical expertise to customize formulations on a global basis for a variety of end-use markets, such as electronics, consumer, healthcare, and automotive.
PolyOne previously announced joint development efforts with Archer Daniels Midland to produce bio-plasticizers for use in vinyl-related markets. Planned development work with Segetis expands PolyOne’s current relationships in bio-derived plasticizers to extend into non-vinyl products.
