Research In Motion (RIM) earned $398.3 million on revenue of $2.78 billion for its third quarter of 2008, the Canadian maker of BlackBerry smartphones announced last night.
The company’s income was down from $495.5 million in the second quarter, yet an increase from $370.5 million last year. Revenue increased from $2.58 billion in the second quarter and $1.67 billion last year.
RIM shipped 6.7 million units in the third quarter, which was 81% of its income. There were roughly 2.6 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts, making the current total 21 million accounts.
“We are pleased to report record revenue results for the third quarter and we have entered the fourth quarter with strong momentum despite the challenging general economic conditions. In fact, we have enjoyed our best ever start to the holiday buying season over the past few weeks,” co-CEO Jim Balsillie said in a prepared statement.
RIM’s news in the quarter included the launch of the touchscreen Storm, which began with strong sales despite a Verizon Wireless network glitch and lukewarm reviews. Verizon is currently selling the Storm through its Website and is slowly putting inventory back into stores, although many stores won’t have it in time for the holidays.
RIM also launched the Bold and Pearl Flip phones, plus content partnerships with a variety of brand names such as AOL, Microsoft, MySpace and TiVo.
