Programmable encoders with enhanced monitoring

Encoders are available with an enhanced monitoring feature that signals potential failure of the encoder. Baumer says the HS35F EMS encoders provide positioning and speed control and endure extreme mechanical strain. The encoders let manufacturers improve the safety and reliability of processing lines and minimize downtime.

A microprocessor monitors the device, and if a failure is detected, an alarm alerts the master controller. The encoder has a green LED light to indicate proper operation; a flashing red LED tells of error in increments, zero pulse, or signal consistency; and a solid red LED indicates output driver overload.

The hollow shaft encoders have diameters from 0.5 to 1.0 in., and the devices can be customized with shaft insert adapters to provide electrical isolation up to 2.5 kV and prevent bearing corrosion and wear. The company says the encoder’s ShaftLock system allows it to endure high mechanical loads at speeds up to 5,000 rpm and 60 arcsec or better accuracy.

The encoder includes extra-durable castings, the company says, and wall structures. Dual seals, lubricants, and a powder coating on the bearing housing and cover protect against corrosion and operate in many conditions. In IP67 versions, impermeability seals protect against high pressure wash down. Tether mounting allows for easy installation, the company says.
