Reduce Costs, Improve Quality of RoHS, REACH Compliance Declarations

Jim Kandler, Managing Director of RoHS Ready LLC, and Dr Aidan Turnbull, Director of BOMcheck.net, will highlight how companies can reduce costs and improve quality of RoHS and REACH compliance declarations at a complimentary seminar at the SMTA International Conference (www.smta.org/smtai), Donald Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont IL on Tuesday September 30 at 5.30pm.

In discussions together, Dr Turnbull and Mr. Kandler realized that they share many of the same observations about the collection of compliance declarations for RoHS and REACH. So they decided to assemble a joint informative presentation to share their practical experience and best practice recommendations.

Prior to founding the RoHS Ready LLC consultancy earlier this year, Mr Kandler led the GE Healthcare sourcing effort to collect materials declarations for 250,000 parts and load them into PTC InSight, ENOVIA MCC and Gensuite PCC. During this successful effort, Mr Kandler achieved considerable cost savings for GE Healthcare and worked hands-on with manufacturers and their suppliers to manage exceptions.

“Many manufacturers can significantly reduce declaration collection costs if they setup effective processes” said Mr Kandler. His team found that Lean and Six Sigma practices are well suited to setting up the needed processes. Dr. Turnbull commented “Tools which provide chemicals guidance to users making declarations, and cross-check the entered data, can produce much higher quality declarations.”

BOMcheck is an intuitive, easy-to-use system and provides extensive help and data checking to reduce errors and highlight potential issues whilst suppliers are working on their part declarations.

On first glance, it may appear that Mr Kandler and Dr Turnbull have different views. But their views do overlap. Effective processes chugging along collecting questionable or bad materials declarations data are not useful. On the other hand, high quality materials declarations that are difficult for a user to input into their IT system are not cost-effective. So these two men are in fact discussing compliance declarations for RoHS and REACH from slightly different perspectives.

The seminar is free-of-charge to attend and will be held at the Donald Stephens Convention Center, Room 45, Rosemont IL on Tuesday September 30 at 5.30pm. The seminar is being hosted by the SMTA International Conference (www.smta.org/smtai) and is collocated with the IPC Fall Standards Development Meetings (www.ipc.org/fall-meetings).
