A new report from Yole Développement predicts that the market for MEMS in cell phones and tablets will grow 19.8% to reach a $5.4B value in 2017. This follows the market tripling form 2009 to 2011. In 2011, MEMS market leaders in cell phones and tablets were:
- ST Microelectronics with sales of $477M for motion sensing through accelerometers and gyroscopes;
- AKM with $260M sales of magnetometers for electronics compass solution;
- Avago is the leading supplier of Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) filters and duplexers market with $244M sales; and
- Knowles has $233M revenues from MEMS microphones.
In addition to the existing applications, Yole researchers expect sales of ten new MEMS applications to be more than $100M in 2017.
