Robotic joining technology from KUKA and Böllhoff called Ready2_rivet imparts new flexibility

By Lisa Eitel | April 25, 2018

KUKA now sells a new ready2_use robotic module called ready2_rivet. The self-pierce riveting system for body-in-white (BiW) applications was developed with fastener and assembly supplier Böllhoff. End users can integrate the self-pierce riveting machine with less effort than in the past.

The preconfigured ready2_rivet package can be integrated seamlessly into your production environment and is suitable for all typical tasks in the field of self-pierce riveting.

“Using the KUKA robot and controller with the expertise in mechanical joining technology of our partner Böllhoff, we made an automated turnkey solution for BiW applications,” explained Burkhard Stimmel of KUKA.

This riveting system is aimed at supporting new modes of manufacturing in production shops … especially those that must keep pace with changing model series with quick and flexible operations. Riveting also supports the lightweight construction of new designs in an array of industries — especially for joining aluminum and steel. Here, the system must adjust operations to material strengths and their deformation characteristics. Here, Ready2_rivet excels with self-pierce functality. Plus the design can quickly integrate into existing production environments for quick boosts in productivity and efficiency.

The system uses a KUKA Quantec-series robot and KR C4 robot controller. Böllhoff self-pierce riveters then fix to the Quantec. In fact, the controller works reliably with different mains voltages and types — even in extreme cold, heat or humidity. It speaks 25 languages (including major Asian dialects) and meets globally relevant ISO and US standards.

Also in each Ready2_rivet is a KUKA smartPAD, which makes operator controls intuitive even for inexperienced users. The HMI also supports process controls of the overall system.

The Böllhoff self-pierce riveting design makes joints from both sides. “Lightweight constructions demand modern joining technologies,” said Horst Wittop of Böllhoff. “With our process, we set rivets in a single operation without drilling pilot holes. Then together with KUKA, we were able to implement coordinated components.”

Just one example of several ready2_use packages

KUKA’s ready2_use packages are sector-specific offerings. “Application-oriented solutions … are best developed in cooperation with a system partner,” added Stimmel. “This lets us provide products that offer real added value.”
