Providence, RI — Custom fabricated sapphire front surface optics that include large windows and domes for military navigation and targeting systems are available from Meller Optics, Inc.
Meller Sapphire Optics for military front surface protection applications include windows up to 8‚†dia., ranging from 1/8‚†to 1/2‚†thick with a 70:1 aspect ratio and domes up to 6‚†dia. with 160‚° included angles, depending upon configuration. Providing optimum abrasion resistance to fast moving sand, dirt, water, and harsh chemicals to 1,000‚°C, sapphire is second only to diamond in terms of hardness (Moh 9) and can transmit from the UV to IR.
Featuring up to 85% transmission uncoated and <.25% reflection per surface with A/R coatings, Meller Sapphire Windows can be round, rectangular, and square, and have surface finishes to 60-40 scratch-dig. The domes feature surface accuracy to <1 fringe @633nm and finishes to 20-10 scratch-dig per MIL-PRF-13830. All optics can include special edge treatments, precise hole drilling, and A/R coatings to customer specification.
