Semiconductor technology has helped OSRAM Opto Semiconductors develop one of the smallest 1 W LEDs for backlighting LCD panels. Measuring just 3 x 3 x 1.6 mm, the two white versions of the OSLON LX LEDs suit side injection into light guides with a thickness of 2 to 4 mm so the displays can be made with ultra thin profiles. Thanks to the lens, the light can be injected into light guides efficiently, which enables the manufacture of ultra-thin and uniform displays with LEDs mounted along one edge only.
The compact LED format and the high light output of typically 75 lm or 90 lm at 350 mA is sufficient to inject the light from two edges or even from only one side for uniform backlighting for computer monitors and TVs up to 65 in. diagonal in size. The integrated polynomial lens with a beam angle of 125° achieves an injection efficiency into the light guide of almost 80%.
The OSLON LX is available for two color spaces. The multi-white version (High Color Gamut White) covers 100% of the sRGB color space and has a typical light output of 75 lm. The ultra-white version of the LED covers 80% of the sRGB color space and is a little brighter, with a typical light output of 90 lm.
The unit is manufactured using the latest ThinGaN chip technology with chip level conversion and delivers high optical efficiency and uniform distribution of light. The lens is tailored for maximum light extraction, and its beam characteristic ensures a high injection efficiency of almost 80%.
