Targeting automotive applications, Plessey Semiconductors’ PS25203 sensor can provide a contactless ECG measurement for driver fatigue monitoring or sensing seat occupancy. In addition to driver monitoring for health and alertness by detecting heart rate and respiration, the sensor can determine the occupancy of the car to adjust the ride, handling and air bag deployment depending on the size and location of occupants.
EPIC (Electric Potential Integrated Circuit) sensor technology measures tiny changes in an electric field similar to a magnetometer detecting changes in a magnetic field even at a distance and through clothing. Already in commercial production, by adjusting the sensor’s DSP and amplification circuitry, it can be tuned for detection at a distance required for automotive applications.
