Inside Honda’s 10-speed automatic tranny
The overall length of this ten-speed automatic tranny from Honda is just under 15 in. Honda says that’s about 1.7-in shorter than the existing six-speed trannies it now uses. This ten-speed goes in the Honda 2018 Odyssey and is the first production ten-speed for front-drive vehicles. It contains four planetary gear sets. A two-way clutch replaces the forward/reverse mechanism’s one-way clutch and multi-disc brake. The torque converter also is relatively thin. Another point to note, though not visible in this view, is a ring gear incorporating a row of teeth on its inner diameter that transfers torque to the differential.
