Robots used in surgical applications must function reliably, including all of their components. Cabling can be a point of weakness. Special flexible and durable flat silicone cables can be an alternative to round PVC or flat PTFE cables. These silicone cables are more flexible, allowing for a tighter bend radius and reduced weight and space needs. They can also deliver more current and reduce noise.
Each element in these cables is a solid, one piece construction completely surrounded by silicone, ensuring that they do not rub against each other and wear during a lifetime of more than 10 million cycles. The unique silicone is “self-healing” from small punctures and cable jacket damage and can easily be repaired in the field. In addition, the halogen-free silicone encapsulation will not delaminate or degrade due to exposure to steam, water, alcohol, UV light, mechanical abuse, autoclave and many chemicals.
The lightweight cables can incorporate any variety of power, data and video conductors in a single compact cable design. In addition, the cables can also include single and multi-lumen tubing for air or liquid transfer, fiber optics, and other design elements such as the StripMount™ fastening strip, all in the same cable.
