Single Unit Certification offered to Industrial Control Panel Manufacturers

ULUL (Underwriters Laboratories) will offer Single Unit Certification to industrial control panel and factory automation equipment manufacturers. This program is available to customers who need to certify a limited number of panels or machines where a field installation site may be unknown.

The program is being offered in response to an industry where product is made on a project basis and may vary slightly from project to project, making Listing difficult. The Single Unit Certification program closes the gap between Listing a product line and Field Evaluations, where a small number of products are evaluated after the installation is complete.

“The industrial control panel and automation equipment business is project or order based. Therefore an ‘unlimited’ production program does not fit their needs,” stated Matteo Redaelli, Engineering Manager, UL International Italia S.r.l. “UL worked with the industry to devise a program that meets the character of their highly specialized project related relationship between machinery and panels and clients. The Single Unit Certification program meets their needs.”

For control panel and automation equipment manufacturers who produce limited quantities on a project basis, the Single Unit Certification will be performed at the factory. All components will be evaluated and after final review, the UL Mark will be provided at the factory without establishing a Follow-Up Service.

UL’s certification of industrial control panels and automated equipment is still available for those manufacturers who need it. These programs cover a wide range of products and are beneficial for series production. Also for equipment that has been installed in the field, Field Evaluations can be performed.

“All product including critical components will be verified by qualified evaluators and reviewers,” said Redaelli. “The Single Unit Certification will reduce certification costs and time-to-market.”
