Sony is developing drones for surveying and inspection, the company announced on July 23. A new division, called Aerosense, will work on the drones for the enterprise market. Japanese robotics start-up ZMP will build the drones, while Sony provides the IoT capabilities, image capture, cloud computing technology, and sensors.

In other robotics news, engineers at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory have received funding from the space agency through the NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) for solar-powered robots that could float through the atmosphere of a gas giant planet such as Jupiter. Closer to home, robotic hands replicate the look and dexterity of human muscle in high-tech prosthetics.
