SPD II and SPD III Surge Protection Family from Weidmuller

By Design World Staff | October 6, 2011

Weidmuller announces a DIN-rail mountable surge protection family, the SPD Series, with local and remote self-monitoring. The range includes seven SPD models, with accessories, for low voltage distribution and protection of industrial control systems, equipment, assemblies and devices.

Weidmuller SPDII and SPDIII

The power range, SPD II, is UL 1449 Edition 3 approved to protect A.C. single and multi-phase distribution circuits with nominal voltages up to 480V, and safely discharge impulse surges up to 40kA (8/20μs) to ground. The SPD II’s compact modular construction uses only 18mm of rail width per phase, and allows quick and easy arrestor replacement. Weidmuller’s SPD III model, for single-phase devices, provides low cost, common-mode protection (between Line, Neutral and Ground), with maximum discharge capacity of 20kA (8/20μs).

Weidmuller’s SPD design is based on high-energy varistors (MOVs) equipped with thermal disconnects and integral failure indicators. A remote signaling contact for disconnection indication is standard on each unit. For ease of replacement, varistors are housed in pluggable modules with connections that are mechanically keyed to the base to prevent incorrect arrestor module replacement. Wide ambient operating temperature ranges, from -50°F to 185°F, make the SPD family particularly suitable for process control applications.

In addition to UL approval, Weidmuller’s new SPD Series, is CSA approved to CSA Electrical Notice No. 516, Surge/Transient Voltage Suppressors.
