Specialty Motors Launches Integrated Intelligent I2 Motor

(Valencia, CA) – Specialty Motors, a manufacturer of custom engineered fractional horsepower electric motors, has announced its entry into the integrated motion control market with the introduction of the I2 Integrated Motor and Controller (patent pending). The I2 (for Integrated, Intelligent) design features a closed loop brushless DC servomotor with built-in drivers, controllers and feedback devices in a single compact package.



The I2 Motor has been designed to simplify and streamline the systems integration and product development process. It can be programmed and monitored using a standard PC through a built-in USB port. Control is achieved with an easy to use application software control program downloaded from the company’s web site. The engineer only has to select velocity or position control mode in order to have the motor running, then define specific parameter settings for the application. The DC brushless motor also runs on universal power from 90VAC to 240VAC or DC, anywhere in the world without adjustment. Programmable logic levels from TTL through 24V provide interface with any digital device such as controllers or sensors as well as selection of current sourcing or current sinking. A low power aux power supply with short circuit protection is also provided to power pots, switch logic and low power indicators.



While the I2 Motor is designed for quick implementation of basic and complex solutions for velocity and positioning applications, it also provides exceptional performance and value. Velocity control ranges from 0.1 degree per second to motor maximum no-load speed with average velocity accuracy better than 0.1%. Position resolution is better than 0.1 degree and no load position accuracy is less than 0.3 degrees. For the initial standard 34 frame motor offering, continuous duty maximum torque ranges from 45 oz-in to 250 oz-in, with no load speeds ranging from 2000 RPM to 8000 RPM.



While integrated motors and controllers are well known in the market place, the design approach used in the I2 Motor makes it unique. It is far simpler than comparable products and utilizes no Hall Sensors in the body of the motor, no encoder and no connecting pins between motor and controller. This reduced parts count also makes it very cost competitive while offering features typical of more expensive models.



The company is currently accepting orders for custom applications and will have an initial offering of nine standard models of Nema 34 frame sized I2 Motors available in the first quarter of 2008.

I2 Motor Features and Functions:
Speed Control Mode-Each of up to16 speeds has parameters set by the end user to set running speed, acceleration rate for leaving previous speed, and deceleration rate for approaching speed setpoint.


Position Control Mode- Each of up to16 positions has parameters set by the end user to set position target, acceleration rate for leaving previous position, velocity limit for changing position, and deceleration rate for approaching position setpoint.


Programmable Digital Output Options- Discrete Outputs can be set for position or speed in or out of range, with alarmsfor stalled or at current limit, and alarms for over temperature and over speed.


Auto Tuning and Identification- Each unit will be programmed with motor type and key parameters. Auto Tuning will be interactive with the host program over a USB interface.
General Parameter Programmability-
• Input and output scale factors for defining units of measure for both
   speed and position
• Input and output offsets
• Loop Gains for servo compensation
• Command and internal state limiters
• Motor matching values such as Kbemf

Input Power: 90 to 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz or 100 to350 VDC, 8
Amps Max


Maximum Controller Temperature (Operating): 85o C.
Ambient Range –20oC to +50oC (-4oF to +122oF)
On Controller: +125oC on transistors, +85oC elsewhere


Control Interfaces-All interface inputs and outputs share a common ground.


Serial Digital-Programming and Digital Communications will be through a USB interface with application programming created through custom host software (Wizard) installed on a PC.


Analog I/O:
1 programmable input:
0 to 10VDC or 4 to 20 mA, 12 bit resolution, input return common mode range +/- 5 VDC
(Differential Input)
1 programmable output: 0 to 10 VDC or 4 to 20 mA, 12 bit resolution


Discrete Digital I/O– Inputs: Enable Drive, Disable Drive, Position Index (Homing). 4 programmable inputs (assignable to
up to 16 variables). Active state (hi or low), Threshold Voltage


Inputs: Enable Drive, Disable Drive, Position Index (Homing). 4 programmable inputs (assignable to up to 16 variables).

Outputs: Motor Enabled, motor fault, 4 customer selectable outputs. Output logic is programmable from TTL through
24VDC for sensors. (250 mA @24VDC). Options include Active State (hi or low), Open Drain (NPN, sinking) or Open
Source (PNP, sourcing), settable voltage levels.
