Stem provides more ways to store power and control electricity costs

A Stem system includes PowerStores or modular 18 kW/kWh towers (right) that install in a customer’s utility room and can be scaled up and aggregated to create a system resource.

Stem is a sort of customized battery for businesses. A Stem system includes PowerStores or modular 18 kW/kWh towers that install in a customer’s utility room and can be scaled up and aggregated to create a system resource. A PowerMonitor is a small metering device with communication and computing capability to monitor load at high-resolution. And PowerScope is software optimizes control of the PowerStores. Optimization can be focused on economic dispatch, load security or any hybrid goal depending on customer and utility priorities.

Stem says its technology lets utilities:

  • Provide customer tools to manage energy use, leading to greater alignment of utility cost and customer price.
  • Access an aggregated capacity resource of distributed energy storage systems.
  • Manage distribution volatility introduced by erratic loads and increasing renewables.

Stem is said to offer these characteristics:

  1. The inclusion of advanced software means that operation is automated and the system provides value without requiring behavior changes by the customer.
  2. The system was designed from the ground up by grid operators.

Unlike traditional storage equipment, Stem’s advanced analytics means that the battery is right-sized for the installation.

Distributed Energy Storage

  • Stem aggregates behind-the-meter storage capacity to provide a low-cost, flexible, and dispatchable resource located in congested load centers. By operating at the edge of the network, Stem solves grid challenges at the transmission, distribution, and customer levels. Behind-the-meter also offers single day installation, without the expensive balance-of-system costs associated with high-voltage resources.
