T-Mobile said Monday that the ahead-of-schedule repack of a New York television station’s spectrum will bring LTE service to the city more quickly on the carrier’s 600 MHz spectrum.
The company and CBS Television Stations announced the completion of an “accelerated repack” of spectrum previously held by WLNY-TV on parts of Long Island, including portions Brooklyn and Queens.
The carrier plans to begin operating on the newly cleared spectrum early next year. New York is one of 30 markets where T-Mobile is building LTE networks that can be upgraded to 5G.
“The T-Mobile team is deploying 600 MHz LTE across the country at record pace and we’re laying the foundation for 5G in [New York City] by deploying 600 MHz with 5G-ready gear,” T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray said in a statement.
