T-Mobile USA has expanded its HSPA+ network in almost 50 markets, covering more than 85 million Americans, the company said today. T-Mobile plans to double its HSPA+ footprint by the end of the year and will launch its first HSPA+ smartphone later this summer.
“T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network now offers 4G speeds to more people than any other wireless network in the country,” said T-Mobile Chief Network Officer Neville Ray in a statement.
Sixteen of T-Mobile’s current 3G devices, including more than a dozen smartphones and the new Android-based Samsung Vibrant, will benefit from the network enhancements. The carrier’s aggressive HSPA+ push is on track to cover 185 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas with backhaul in place by the end of the year.
Some of the nation’s largest cities, including Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., now have T-Mobile’s HSPA+ service. The carrier’s latest expansion also covers large cities in Midwest and southern states, including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The carrier also said it was expanding the availability of its webConnect mobile broadband products to T-Mobile retail stores in all areas with HSPA+ service. Its high-speed 3G lineup includes the latest version of its webConnect Rocket laptop dongle and the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook.
