Technologies Soar to New Heights

To understand the impact of shock and vibration on a vehicle that will reach land speeds of 800 mph, Team North American Eagle chose Geomagic software to digitally recreate the 56-ft. long Eagle vehicle for engineering analysis studies. In addition, the software will be used to speed, automate, and simplify workflow by transforming the scan data into a surfaced model. That model will be used to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite-element analysis (FEA) studies on the vehicle using the exact geometry of the car versus analyzing CAD model geometry.

Geomagic Studio software is used to digitally recreate the 56-foot-long North American Eagle vehicle for engineering analysis studies to obtain true performance characteristics.

This project is expected to yield valuable research insights including the effect of shock waves on aerodynamics; new nanolaminate metal technology that will be used for ballistic shielding by the U.S. military; integrated fuel devices that remove hydrocarbons from the air; performance of bio-diesel and bio-fuels; new magnetic braking systems that generate 4700 brake horsepower at 800 mph and never wear out; high-speed bearings and special lubrication for wheels that are safe up to 950 mph; and development and testing of high-speed parachutes.

Geomagic Studio is used to speed, automate and simplify the workflow of transforming 30 million points of scan data into a surfaced model that will be used to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite-element analysis (FEA) studies on the as-built North American Eagle vehicle.

Geomagic recently shipped a new version of Geomagic Studio software that adds surface manipulation capabilities, as well as improved point and polygon procession functions. The company claims that the software identifies, analyzes, and corrects imperfections in scan data to create high-quality geometric and freeform surfaces that can be further manipulated in CAD. Other new features include automatic surface extension and trimming capabilities for creating sharp edges between neighboring surfaces, and advanced tools that help you exclude regions of a mesh that deviate from the desired surface classification.

Geomagic Studio 10x provides major improvements that accelerate every step in creating intelligent, CAD-ready surfaces.  The latest release features a new registration algorithm for more accurate point clouds, a new decimation algorithm for more efficient polygon models, and powerful new surface manipulation capabilities.

The software comes in three editions:
‚•Geomagic Studio Fashion targets mechanical design applications.
‚•Geomagic Studio Shape is designed for medical and scientific applications.
‚•Geomagic Studio Complete includes both Fashion and Shape.
