SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Testing on a site formerly owned by Ford Motor Co. in suburban Detroit where chemical solvents have been found shows pollutants are more widely dispersed than initially suspected.
Results were discussed Wednesday at a public meeting, and there’s concern a park and area homes could be affected.
An environmental consulting company conducted tests around the roughly 200-acre site of the ex-plant in Macomb County’s Shelby Township for trichloroethylene and trichloroethane. Both are potentially hazardous substances and can lead to health problems.
The ex-Visteon Corp. plant formerly was known as Ford Utica Trim. Officials estimate cleanup costs at up to $150 million.
Another company owns the site, but Ford is responsible for soil remediation.
Ford says it’s conducting an investigation and working with the state to determine possible cleanup actions.
