Verizon earlier this month demonstrated software-defined network orchestration with Colt Technology Services in what the companies called a first-of-its-kind test.
The carrier and network services company successfully altered the bandwidth in their production networks in near-real-time at an event in Colt’s native London.
Company officials said that unlike closed systems that made interoperability between providers difficult, the test showcased two-way, inter-carrier SDN orchestration between two carrier networks.
They added that the demonstration would be important to enabling real-time automation across carriers, which would eventually help businesses and organizations improve agility and manage network traffic.
“Before today, no-one has been able to demonstrate elastic flexibility across carriers,” Peter Konings, Verizon’s product development head for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said in a statement. “Today’s demonstration is the first time anyone in the world has been able to flex network capacity in both directions across network boundaries. This will be a game changer for enterprise networking.”
The companies are working with MEF to develop industry standards — namely for inter-carrier business and operational Lifecycle Service Orchestration APIs.
