Vertellus offers advanced adhesives and sealants for industrial manufacturers

By Michelle Froese | November 5, 2019

Vertellus, a global supplier of high-performance additives to the plastics and polymers industries, recently showcased its portfolio of adhesives and sealants at K 2019. This includes the company’s Polycin polyols, Vorite prepolymers, and Sealrite gels.

Vertellus’ D-Encapsulant is ideal for deep-sea cable applications due to its strength and reliablity.

These materials are helping a wide variety of device manufacturers maintain product integrity in the face of increasingly harsh environments. The need for high mechanical performance products such as these is evident in range of markets – from the most industrial, such as electrical wire and cable and components, to those that are highly specialized, like medical devices.

Vertellus’ two-component PU systems, such as its D-Encapsulant for example, are fast becoming the materials of choice in deep-sea cable applications due to their special features, which help enable the successful manufacture of sub-marine cables. These PU systems are hydrophobic which keeps moisture from penetrating the sensitive electrical and fiber optic system, which is critical in a high water or pressure environment.

D-Encapsulant maintains low stress under a wide temperature range, which ensures no change in physical properties between -50o and 100o C and is vital to the longevity of the cable assembly in deep sea use. As temperatures change, the sealant will not swell, protecting the internal components from time of manufacture at ambient temperature through to installation in frigid ocean waters. In addition, Vertellus sealants and adhesives are good insulators, helping to maintain electrical signal strength along the length of the transmission line.

As global electricity demand grows due to industrialization and electrification of rural areas, energy transmission systems need to be durable in increasingly harsher climate conditions. For the design of electrical and cable components that must withstand a wide range of temperature and humidity levels, manufacturers can choose Vertellus Sealrite gels for their mechanical and sealant properties.

A single Sealrite formulation maintains its mechanical properties over wide operating conditions, preventing manufacturers from having to proliferate SKUs to meet the needs of different geographic regions. Rather than developing separate devices rated for these different conditions, Vertellus Sealrite gels may enable a standard, one-size-fits-all device.

Beyond industrial applications, adhesives and sealants for medical devices require materials, which are not only safe to use when in contact with human tissue, but also can withstand challenging environments associated with manufacturing (multiple high-temperature curing cycles) and sterilization without compromising strength or mechanical properties.

Vertellus Polycin polyols and Vorite prepolymers when combined become high-performance adhesive and sealant systems. Material components are designed and paired for applications with critical performance specifications, such as specific hardness and gel time, for dialyzers, oxygenators and catheters. Single-component Sealrite sealant systems offer device and component manufacturers the moisture-blocking and self-sealing properties needed in applications such as industrial batteries.
