Talk about creepy-crawlies. GE Ventures, GE’s startup and incubation arm, has launched Avitas Systems, a new company dedicated to inspection robots. They will use autonomous and semi-autonomous crawling robots, as well as drones, to inspect infrastructure. In particular, they’ll target areas that are too high, too small, or too dangerous to reach for human workers. A particularly notable addition to the team is the Sarcos S Snake Robot, a 13-pound machine packed with sensors that can crawl inside very small spaces. Avitas Systems will draw from the GE Global Research Center and GE Oil & Gas for expertise in aerial inspection and systems, as well as receiving support from GE Ventures.
