The case study involved a metal fan manufacturer, which faced concerns about part alignment when automating their sheet-metal screw driving process. After careful consideration, Visumatic suggested the VLB-900 Locking Bit system to overcome these ergonomic challenges.

The design:
• Keeps the bit and screw engaged in the nosepiece
• Lets an operator align the parts prior to fastening using the screw to feel the joint
• Allows for vertical, horizontal, or inverted application
• Offers a “pistol grip” or inline assemblies
• Lets the operator “ice pick” the assembly, ensuring proper alignment for a seamless application and maximum productivity
For the case study, the #6 socket drive screw was automatically fed to the nosepiece tooling, eliminating handling by the operator and dropped screws inside the squirrel cage assembly. Since the bit is locked and backs the screw, the operator could use the screw body itself to “ice-pick” the mating parts into position when the alignment was not ideal.
