At CES 2018, exhibiting companies displayed many new products for smart homes, smart health, smart cars and more. One of the features that people expect to see in future vehicles is autonomous driving. To go beyond today’s technology demonstrations and be affordable to the masses, automotive suppliers will have to make the sensing technologies more affordable.
One of the pioneering companies in the use of solid-state LiDAR (SSL) technology for vehicles and other applications is LeddarTech that calls its technology Leddar. At CES 2018, the company was named a CES 2018 Innovation Awards Honoree in two categories for its LeddarCore LCA2 solid-state LiDAR IC: (1) Embedded Technologies, and (2) Vehicle Intelligence and Self-Driving Technology.
With its LeddarCore LCA2, LeddarTech sets claim to be the world’s first LiDAR integrated circuit (IC) enabling rapid high-volume deployment of solid-state 3D LiDARs that meet the automotive industry’s performance and reliability requirements and also address the cost issues.
The ICs generate up to 245 000 digitized waveforms per second, from nearly 1.3 billion samples and perform a similar number of sample-based arithmetic operations. Proprietary signal processing algorithms perform over 25 billion operations per second to further process the waveforms. The results produce a LiDAR data set to enable the most advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving applications.
According to Charles Boulanger, CEO at LeddarTech, the company’s LeddarCore IC business model is geared toward mass production of SSL sensors by Tier-1 manufacturers for deployment by automotive OEMs as early as 2020.
