Read: Cortical Modem Implant Promises Cyborg Vision
DARPA scientists are working on a “cortical modem”, an implantable that plugs into your DNA and your visual cortex to cure sight loss. It gives you a heads-up display as well.
The cortical modem concept is rooted in optogenetics, which uses light to control neurons that have been genetically sensitized to light. Essentially, proteins are added to the brain to give scientists the ability to turn your neurons back on.
The cortical modem could, theoretically, restore sight to blind, but optogenetics has yet to be tested in humans.
