Move over autonomous cars and delivery trucks, self-driving scooters and bikes are coming through. Uber is currently working on the development of autonomous scooters and bikes that can drive riders to their destination and bring itself to charging stations. 3DRobotics CEO Chris Anderson tweeted the news that they are hiring engineers for “Micromobility Robotics,” a division under JUMP, Uber’s on-demand rideshare for scooters and bikes.
While the Micromobility Robotics section of the company will begin work on the autonomous scooters and bikes, the main group, Uber Advance Technologies Group, is set to continue working toward self-driving vehicles.
There is limited information regarding the details of the project, but TechCrunch was able to locate a Google Form that states, “The New Mobilities team at Uber is exploring ways to improve safety, rider experience, and operational efficiency of our shared electric scooters and bicycles through the application of sensing and robotics technologies.” So while there is no clear answer about when we could be seeing self-driving scooters and bikes, they are in the works!
