The Nagoya, Japan-based CC-Link Partner Association (CLPA), whose objective is to promote the widespread use of the Ethernet-based industrial open network CC-Link IE, has announced that Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) will join the CLPA as a new board member. The two organizations will collaborate on promoting solutions based on CC-Link IE. Cisco’s participation in the CLPA will also include driving technology in the greater Asia Pacific for industrial environments such as manufacturing.
Digitization in factories is a recent trend, and large-capacity networks are coming into demand. Additionally, many factories are transitioning to an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. In light of these trends, Cisco and CLPA will collaborate on Industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions based on CC-Link IE’s fast and reliable 1 GB bandwidth.
Background on Cisco-CLPA cooperation
Cisco is a leader in Ethernet protocol and security technology, helping to connect devices widely used in office automation. In order to achieve greater efficiency and higher quality in manufacturing, the Internet of Everything (IoE) – connecting the remaining “everything” beyond IoT – will improve business processes, as well as employee safety and decision making by allowing the use of data from connected things. Manufacturing is also moving toward the use of Ethernet. These shifts are also expanding into the collection and organization of useful data for safer operations and improved product tracking.
The CLPA provides “CC-Link IE,” which uses Ethernet technology and has been widely adopted by manufacturing industries that require broadband performance and high reliability. While CC-Link IE has an original protocol architecture to secure communication determinism, support for the use of TCP/IP technology was also added as the terminals and networks used in the manufacturing industry have become more diverse.
As a CLPA board member, Cisco provides expertise in Ethernet switches and wireless, TCP/IP and security technology, and will help CLPA build a solid foundation of TCP/IP within a CC-Link IE network infrastructure. The manufacturing industry is now experiencing a widespread demand for industrial networks that provide high security and determinism. CC-Link IE can answer these demands with gigabit performance while maintaining TCP/IP compatibility.
