The P7700 series of TriMode probes from Tektronix offer up to 20 GHz bandwidth and minimize probe loading and are designed to improve access to smaller, more densely packed test locations.
Standards that include LPDDR4, MIPI D-PHY and C-PHY require probes that minimize signal loss. Unlike other probe designs that use long tip cables connected to a remote amplifier, the P7700 Series probes introduce a new design where the probe’s input amplifier sits less than 4 mm from the connection point, minimizing signal loss, probe tip capacitance and noise. Further, the signal path of the P7700 probes is fully characterized and automatically de-embedded from measurement results.
When making test connections to smaller devices, often engineers must attach probe tips by soldering to a small component or feature on a circuit board. As the size of these features shrink, they become more fragile and attaching a probe tip can add stress to the component or the circuit board. In addition, multiple probe connections are often required to capture signals on multiple lanes of a MIPI bus or for LPDDR memory, the data, strobe, and clock signals. The P7700 series probes use compact solder tips that fit into tight spots to minimize the impact on the small size components on the board.
The P7700 series probes also use a special TekFlex connector that supports a wide range of accessories designed to be easy to attach and at the same time provide a reliable, secure connection. The connector includes a small LED that lights up to confirm connectivity from the scope to the accessory tip.
The P7700 series probe comes standard with low-cost solder tips. The P7700 TriMode probes are available for order worldwide. Probe prices start at $8,500. A set of 5 TekFlex solder tips is available for $250.
