NYU Wireless and Straight Path Spectrum Team Up to Address Escalating Demand For Bandwidth

By atesmeh | May 1, 2014

Brooklyn, NY—NYU Wireless and Straight Path Spectrum, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Straight Path Communications Inc., announced that Straight Path is joining the New York University-based research center as an affiliate sponsor and advisory board member.

NYU Wireless—a research center in the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, the NYU Langone School of Medicine, and the Computer Science Department of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences—aims to expand today’s mobile and wireless capabilities to create a sustainable networked society using broadband wireless devices, networks, and applications. Through its Industrial Affiliates membership, Straight Path is making a commitment to support the center’s research activities, including its pioneering work in understanding and characterizing the propagation environment at millimeter wave frequencies, including 28 and 39 GHz.

“As the largest holder of 39 GHz spectrum in the United States, Straight Path is dedicated to supporting the study of millimeter frequencies. Straight Path sees an opportunity and significant value in the innovative research being conducted at NYU Wireless and among its industrial affiliates,” said Davidi Jonas, Straight Path’s CEO.

“We are happy to be working closely with Straight Path,” said Professor Theodore (Ted) Rappaport, NYU Wireless director and founder. “Straight Path is dedicated to maximizing the value of the millimeter wave spectrum to help mobile network operators and Internet service providers provide the backhaul and, eventually, mobility that will be required for wireless networks of the future. I am confident that Straight Path will gain value by becoming part of the ecosystem at NYU Wireless, and it will bring a unique perspective to our center. Our students will benefit from the technological insights and experiences that Straight Path brings.” Rappaport holds the David Lee/Ernst Weber Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, as well as appointments at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and in the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center.

NYU Wireless includes more than 20 faculty and 100 graduate students and focuses on research and teaching in the fields of wireless communications systems, signals, and antennas at the millimeter wave frequency bands, as well as activities in the medical and computing areas. The center’s research strives for results that will lead to more than a thousand-fold increase in the data capacity of mobile devices in the coming years—particularly good news because demand for capacity reportedly doubles annually due to steadily increasing levels of gaming, Web browsing, and music and video streaming on those devices.

“Straight Path’s national holdings—especially in top markets—are important to the realization of a thousand-fold data capacity increase,” Jonas added. “Ted Rappaport and the NYU Wireless researchers are developing the next generation of wireless technology. As a company that recognizes the value of thought leadership and the importance of identifying next-gen solutions, Straight Path is pleased to join such a prestigious group.”

Straight Path is the tenth company to join NYU Wireless as an industrial affiliate sponsor, joining AT&T, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Intel Corporation, L3 Communications, National Instruments, Qualcomm Technologies, Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), and Samsung Corporation. Each sponsoring company assigns two members to the research center’s industrial affiliates’ board, ensuring an unusually deep, cooperative relationship. These board members keep faculty and students informed about industry needs and provide employment opportunities for students, while the academicians and students bring innovative ideas and solutions into the affiliate companies of NYU Wireless.
