QuickPlay Media, provider of solutions that manage the business of mobile video, today unveiled the findings of its latest quarterly consumer consumption analysis. The results – aggregate usage statistics from 15 QuickPlay-powered services over the first quarter of 2009 – reveal a 61 percent rise in consumer demand for streaming and mobile video download content.
The results, compiled between Jan. 1 and March 31, show that the number of total live TV and video streams viewed in the first quarter increased significantly from the previous quarter. The number of unique streaming viewers also experienced a noticeable increase over the same timeframe.
QuickPlay’s analysis showed that live TV and video streams increased by 61 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. The total number of unique viewers increased by 11 percent for the same timeframes, while average streams per user decreased slightly, from 17.4 in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 15.7 in first quarter of 2009.
For the same timeframe, video downloads increased by 3 percent and average downloads per user rose from 6.1 to 6.3.
The report went on to say that consumers preferred news and sports as the top two categories, respectively, for mobile streaming video.
The results of the analysis were supported by Lewis Ward, research manager of wireless communications at IDC. “The positive results demonstrated by QuickPlay Media are consistent with our research that suggests mobile TV and video services will continue to grow at a steady pace, with the most popular categories being news, sports and music,” Ward said.
