RIM Unveils Enterprise Server, Alliance with HP

Research In Motion (RIM) today announced various releases from its eighth annual Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in Orlando, Florida.

Among the most notable news from WES, RIM unveiled its new BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 and an alliance with HP to deliver a portfolio of solutions for business mobility on the BlackBerry platform. The solutions include support for RIM’s new server and a remote cloud-based printing application for BlackBerry.

The new BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 enables a centrally managed link between BlackBerry smartphones and enterprise systems, applications, corporate phone environments (with BlackBerry Mobile Voice System) and wireless networks.

The Enterprise Server 5.0 boasts integration with IBM Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise, and is designed to provide secure access to e-mail, organizer data, instant messaging, voice (via BlackBerry MVS), browser and other enterprise applications.

As for the alliance between HP and RIM, that includes the release of CloudPrint for BlackBerry smartphones and an HP Operations Manager for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which are both on display at WES.

HP CloudPrint for BlackBerry smartphones is a Web services-based solution that allows users to print e-mails, documents, photos and Web pages using a BlackBerry smartphone, wherever they are – in the office, at home or on the road.

HP Operations Manager software allows customers to centrally monitor and manage the extended BlackBerry solution ecosystem, whether it is virtual or physical. The ecosystem includes the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, mail servers, databases, Microsoft Active Directory and server operating systems such as Windows Server.

Other announcements include the release of BlackBerry Mobile Voice System (BlackBerry MVS) Server for Cisco Unified Communications Manager and a new version of BlackBerry MVS Server for use with Cisco Unified Communications Manager version 6.1 or later.

For developers, RIM announced the availability of a push API that will enable BlackBerry platform developers to build real-time content into mobile applications, such as those with news, weather, banking, medical, IT services applications and games.
