Schunk – multi-functional ERS rotary module

By Stacy Combest | August 23, 2012

Share

Schunk’s ERS rotary module that features a center hole for cable feed through as well as a compact dimension, making it ideally suited for designing orderly arranged and compact high performance systems.

Set to succeed the proven STM module, the rotary module is multi-functional and can be utilized as a workpiece support for laser welding machines, as a freely programmable rotary indexing table or as an axis of rotation of grippers in gantries. With its flexibility, the module can approach any intermediate position at a repeat accuracy of 0.02 degrees. When used as an alternative for traditional pneumatic rotary modules, the ERS rotary module can effectively increase the plant’s efficiency and expand its range of usage.

Currently, the ERS is the most compact electric rotary module available in the market. It is offered in three different sizes with diameters 135 mm, 170 mm and 210 mm. Size 170 has a height of 66 mm and delivers a convincing torque of 5 Nm.

Meanwhile, an optional pneumatic holding brake has been integrated into the module to ensure that individual positions are reliably fixed. The ERS module also features a torque motor with hollow shaft, which enables it to be wear-free, more compact, lightweight and extremely reliable. Unlike rotary modules with traditional servo motors, the ERS module eliminates the need for additional interfering contours. Elasticity due to friction and scope also do not apply, enhancing precision, dynamic and positioning resolution.

The ERS module achieves an efficiency factor of 80 percent and works more precisely, efficiently and quietly than comparable servo motors, while its high compact performance helps reduce operating costs.
