SDA GyroChips’ Production Launch in Late 2008

By Design World Staff | October 27, 2008

Concord, CA ‚– Systron Donner Automotive (SDA), a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST), is announcing that production of their automotive gyros for safety-critical automotive applications to date will begin in late 2008.

Like the MicroGyro which is currently in production, the GyroChip is an ‚“integrated gyro‚” which incorporates both the quartz rate sensing element and ASIC signal processing circuit in a single package. Integration of functionality and components permits the system to be less complex and even better, less expensive to manufacture. The simplified manufacturing flow which has a reduced number of process steps equates to complexity reductions and cost improvements. The number of internal components has also been reduced providing for even more cost improvements, translating into a more cost competitive product for the OEM and ultimately the consumer.

The automotive market demands inertial sensor manufacturers to continuously shrink the package design. SDA rose to this challenge and the GyroChip represents a 29% circuit board footprint reduction from the current SDA MicroGyro. This smaller GyroChip helps SDA customer‚’s eliminate costs by reducing the size of their circuit boards.

Systron Donner Automotive has produced over 50 million quartz rate sensors for the automotive and related transportation industries utilizing the latest state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and technologies available. The NEW SDA GyroChip represents the pinnacle of highly stable, quartz-based inertial angular rate sensors for safety-critical applications such as Electronic Stability Control and Lane Keeping. This robust GyroChip thrives in the harsh environment found in underhood applications.
