Trelleborg Announces Specialized Sealing Materials

By Design World Staff | June 23, 2009

Fort Wayne, IN ‚– Trelleborg Sealing Solutions announce specialized sealing materials tested for biofuel applications. These formulations enhance integrity and long service life based on the development of specialized formulations of typical Fluorocarbon (FKM) and Fluorosilicone (FVMQ) compounds. Applications include diesel and gasoline fuel connectors and injectors, either high or low pressure, as well as diesel pumps.

Conducting in-depth research on the suitability of sealing formulations in biofuel mixtures, the company evaluated the compatibility of typical automotive biofuels for both diesel and gasoline engines, with various fuel system sealing compounds, focusing on hardness, stress-strain and volume swelling. Since biofuel technology infancy, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has been working with the automotive and heavy truck & equipment manufacturers recognizing the sealant issues inherent for biofueling systems and striving to offer solutions.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions evaluated performance of various material for sealing systems with a wide range of fuels. Trelleborg expanded testing of the typical automotive fuels for both diesel and gasoline engines fuels to include a range of primarily Fluorocarbon compounds and one Fluorosilicone material, all specially formulated for fuel use.

All compounds were mixed using standard laboratory mixing equipment. The compatibility of the compounds with the fuels was assessed by conducting accelerated aging under laboratory conditions. The test methods used were for hardness to ASTM D 2240, stress-strain to ASTM D 412 and fluid immersion to ASTM D 471.

Tests prove that careful selection of sealing materials is vital in biofuel applications. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions offers a number of sealing materials optimized for biofuel sealing applications including diesel and gasoline fuel connectors and injectors, either high or low pressure, as well as diesel pumps.
