Calix said it has earned the business of another 12 communications service providers that are building or upgrading their networks after having received grants in the second round of the Broadband Initiative Program (BIP).
One of the larger accounts is Wilkes Telephone and Electric Co., based in Washington, Ga., which received a large BIP award of more than $48 million (of which only a portion is for access technology).
Wilkes Telephone and Electric is an existing Calix customer. Now with the BIP funds, the company plans to deploy a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network across Lincoln, Taliaferro and Wilkes counties in Georgia. Specifically, the service provider will install a gigabit passive optical network (GPON), based on the Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) and the vendor’s 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs).
Wilkes Telephone and Electric will reach more than 7,000 residents, 800 businesses and 52 anchor institutions.
