Whenever I’m cooking, it’s always difficult to actually prepare the meal, hold seven hundred things in your hand, and then flip the page on the recipe book to see what the next step is. The NailO wants to help. A team at the MIT Media Lab is developing a thumbnail-mounted trackpad operated by the index finger of the same hand.
Integrated into the tiny trackpad are a battery, capacitive sensors, a microcontroller, a Bluetooth radio chip and a capacitive-sensing chip. To use it, you first power it up by maintaining finger contact with it for two or three seconds. They you move your index finger up, down, left or right across its surface, guiding the mouse on the paired computer. To select something onscreen, you just press your finger down.
Off-the-shelf electrode sheets designed for regular track pads are being used to detect the location of tour fingertip. The MIT team is also looking into a smaller half-millimeter-thick battery, along with a single chip that serves as a microcontroller, Bluetooth radio, and capacitive sensor chip.
