FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Friday he intends to appoint the commission’s managing director Jon Wilkins as Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau following the departure of current chief Roger Sherman.
The change in leadership will come with Sherman’s departure at the end of February, according to the commission’s announcement. FCC CFO Mark Stephens will step in to Wilkins’ former role as acting Managing Director.
Sherman joined the commission in 2013, after serving as Democratic Chief Counsel to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Wilkins, who also joined the commission in 2013, was formerly a lawyer at McKinsey & Company in Washington, DC, where he was a partner and a leader in the company’s Telecommunications, Media, and Technology practice.
“Jon has been invaluable as our chief operating officer and an advisor,” Wheeler said in a statement. “Notably, he has led the modernization efforts in the E-rate and Lifeline programs, and has worked closely with the Incentive Auction Task Force on operational preparations for the upcoming, first-of-its-kind auction. Having someone with Jon’s managerial skills and understanding of the Incentive Auction is particularly important as we put in place plans for the post-auction transition.”
