Mexico is the third country to host Google’s high-speed public WiFi platform, the tech giant announced this week.
Google officials detailed an agreement to convert hotspots operated by Mexican internet service provider Sitwifi to Google Station, which allows its partners to easily introduce WiFi in public spaces.
The service became available Tuesday in more than 60 high-traffic areas in Mexico City and 44 additional cities. The company expects to expand to more than 100 hotspots across the country by the end of the year.
Mexico has the third-highest level of internet penetration in Latin America, Google Station officials wrote, but most users rely on mobile data and access remains a challenge.
“We are finding that public WiFi remains still a very important way to get online,” product management VP Anjali Joshi told reporters, according to Reuters.
Google Station debuted in India and was previously launched in Indonesia.
