Bishop-Wisecarver Attends Governor’s Summit

By Kathleen Zipp | April 18, 2007

Pamela Kan, President of Bishop-Wisecarver Corp., joined California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other business, labor, and education leaders, in a one-day Career Technical Education Summit. The Governor held the summit to discuss the future of the state’s workforce and to address concerns over decades of underinvestment in career and technical education for young people.

In California, officials predict that the number of workers needed in manufacturing, transportation, and other industries will be greater than the number of students graduating with training in these areas. Already, Gov. Schwarzenegger has increased funding for career technical education by 18 percent. According to the Office of the Governor, $52 million of the proposed 20007-08 budget will go to building and improving career technical education programs.

The Governor says that to stay competitive, California must invest in career technical education. “California is a global center of innovation and a nation-state in terms of economic power. But we must make investments in career tech education if we are going to keep our competitive edge,” says Gov. Schwarzenegger. “The world’s economies are strategically investing in career and technical education. They are preparing the workforce to succeed in the global market. At the same time in California, we have thousands of students dropping out of high school. Career tech education fulfills the needs of the workforce and the needs of our students by giving them multiple pathways for success.”
