On Wednesday Comcast’s Neil Smit officially started his tenure as chairman of the board of directors for the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA.)
During a November NCTA board meeting, Smit was elected to succeed Glenn Britt, who has retired as Time Warner Cable’s CEO and chairman.
According to his online bio, Smit, who is president and CEO of Comcast Cable and executive vice president of Comcast Corporation, also serves as chairman of CableLabs’ board of directors.
“On behalf of the NCTA board and staff, I want to offer my sincere thanks to Glenn for his outstanding leadership and meaningful contributions to NCTA and the entire industry,” NCTA president and CEO Michael Powell said “We will miss Glenn’s sage advice and wisdom and wish him all the best in retirement.
“We are thrilled to welcome Neil Smit as our new chairman. During a time when the TV and Internet marketplace are undergoing rapid innovation and change, Neil’s leadership of Comcast has been outstanding and his expertise and guidance will be critical to NCTA’s success in the coming years.”
Smit joined Comcast in March 2010 from Charter Communications where he served as CEO and director since 2005. Prior to joining Charter, he was the president of Time Warner’s America Online Access Business, where he oversaw Internet access services, including America Online (AOL), CompuServe and Netscape ISPs.
Smit also served on active duty with the Navy SEAL Teams and retired from the service as a Lieutenant Commander.
