High Performance Plastics from Minnesota Rubber and Plastics

Demanding vehicle driveline applications call for high performance plastic seals custom designed and molded by Minnesota Rubber and Plastics (MR&P).

Of the many high performance plastics available, PEEK™, Aurum®, Ultem® and Amodel® are among those custom formulated by MR&P to meet specific vehicle applications. PEEK™

An example is seals and thrust washers for vehicle transmissions. In a service life time, these components are immersed in automatic transmission fluid and operate over a temperature range of -40°F to 264°F (-40°C to 129°C) while withstanding dry and lubricated tribological contacts with pressures up to 100 psi and velocities of up to 8000 ft/min. Under these conditions, materials must be dimensionally and thermally stable to allow for the correct flow of fluid throughout the system.

PEEK™ was the high performance material selected for this application because it combines a low value for the coefficient of friction with outstandingly low wear rates over wide pressure and velocity ranges. In addition to being more durable over time, the MR&P design is more cost effective than traditional materials, and custom seals can be combined with other high performance plastic and elastomer components to form a completed assembly.

MR&P offers comprehensive design services including engineering assistance and design review along with materials engineering for a full range of high performance plastics. MR&P also provides rapid mold design, development and prototype services, process engineering and injection, compression, transfer and liquid silicone rubber molding including metal-to-plastics conversions. These value-added services from MR&P reduce component assembly time, material usage, multiple vendor sources and capital expense.
