TMR sensors improve sensitivity and power efficiency

By Redding Traiger | December 14, 2023

Littelfuse, Inc. announced the release of its highly anticipated 54100 and 54140 miniature Tunnel Magneto-Resistance (TMR) effect sensors. These sensors offer unmatched sensitivity and power efficiency, revolutionizing the magnetic sensing industry.

The key differentiator of the 54100/54140 sensors is their remarkable sensitivity and 100x improvement in power efficiency compared to Hall Effect sensors. These sensors offer activation in the x-y plane instead of the traditional z-axis, providing enhanced functionality. Additionally, they feature a wider operating temperature range of -40 to +100 degrees C, surpassing other solutions available on the market.

The 54100 flange-mount sensor’s compact housing dimensions measure 25.5 x 11.00 x 3.00 mm, making it perfect for various applications. Its versatile case design allows for both screw and adhesive mounting, ensuring easy installation. With a 3-wire configuration (Power – Ground – Output) and digital output, this sensor can switch up to 5.5 Vdc and 3.0 mA output current, providing reliable and accurate results. The sensor leads offer flexibility, with standard lead lengths of 300 mm and 1000 mm, and customization options for high-volume production needs.

On the other hand, the 54140 flat pack sensor delivers exceptional performance in a compact package, measuring only 23.00 x 14.00 x 5.90 mm. Like the 54100, it also provides digital output and is available as a three-wire sensor configuration with the same performance characteristics and customization.

The 54100 and 54140 sensors are well-suited for applications in various markets, including appliances, home and building automation, and industrial sectors.

These Omnipolar TMR sensors are perfect for multiple functional applications, including Position and limit sensing, RPM measurement, Flow metering, Commutation of brushless DC motors, Magnetic encoders, and Angle sensing.

The 54100 and 54140 TMR Sensors are available in bulk quantities of 500. Place sample requests through authorized Littelfuse distributors worldwide.
