Deflate-gate explained
This simple demo by Ball Systems, Westfield, Ind., helped illuminate the controversy surrounding deflated footballs in the Indianapolis/New England game last season. Ball, which creates custom test systems, used a NI USB-6251 data acquisition module to monitor the inflation pressure of a regulation NFL football. Press one button and an air pump inflated the ball to the 13 psi level that is normal for game balls. Press another button and the ball deflated to 10.5 psi, the pressure of balls allegedly put into play during the playoff game. According to Ball Systems regional business development manager Steve Kasparian, many show goers said they couldn’t really discern a difference between the two inflation levels.
