alpha gear Launches Two New Gearhead Products

By Design World Staff | November 3, 2006

alpha gear announced the launch of SPK+, a new right-angle gearhead for applications with high reduction ratios and torques, combines the best of two alpha product families: the top selling SP+ planetary gearhead and the SK+ right-angle gearhead unveiled in 2005. This alliance promises unprecedented performance in an integrated package crammed with practical new features.

Benefits include:
• SPK+ is more compact, lighter and more economical than conventional bevel planetary
gearboxes, which were never well suited for many important applications.

• One gearhead stage less for the majority of reduction ratios: SPK+ achieves higher
reduction ratios than other right-angle gearheads with the same number of stages. Not only
is it more powerful, it is also more economical. In particular, handling tasks — often
necessitating a reduction ratio of i=30 to i=40 — now profit from the superior performance of
a planetary gearhead from alpha. Compared to low-backlash worm gearheads, the next
smaller size usually suffices.

• Only a third of the weight of low-backlash worm gearheads with similar power transmission —
an immense advantage for handling robots and loading/unloading machines with moving
drives.

TPK+ Has Dual Technology Advantage
The new TPK+ right-angle gearhead from alpha gear drives offers a double technology
advantage for all applications with high reduction ratios (i=12 or more). It opens the door to far
reaching enhancements for numerous key applications in the machine building and automation
industries.

TPK+ is a two-stage right-angle gearhead for servo applications featuring a robot flange
according to ISO 9409 (without a pin). It is equipped on the output side with the alpha TP+
planetary gearhead introduced just last year. The focus of TPK+ is on power density, notably in
the torque, the torsional stiffness and the torsional backlash.

This double technology advantage is the sum of the following components:
• An extremely precise, helical-toothed planetary gearhead stage is mounted at the TPK+
output. Optimized helical gearing not only assures the high power density, positioning
accuracy and stiffness typical of planetary gearheads but also facilitates exceptionally
smooth running.

• Thanks to the hypoid gearset at the input (up to i=10 in a single stage), there are now many
applications in which a two-stage gearhead can take the place of a three-stage bevelplanetary
gearhead. Once again, unprecedented smooth running is guaranteed by the innovative hypoid teeth. Added to this, TPK+ offers high continuous speeds and up to 200%
more torque than bevel gearheads.
