Choi Design Inc. has been awarded First Place for the 2018 European Product Design Awards. The annual awards program “recognizes the efforts of talented designers and design teams who aim to improve our daily lives with a practical and beautiful creations, designed to solve a problem, make life easier or simply spread joy.”
The award winning design is for the Flexco XP Staple Fastener, a tool used to repair conveyor belts in the mining industry. Flexco, an industry leader in belt conveyor productivity manufacturing, worked with Choi Design to update their line of portable belt fastening tools with an improved look and user experience. The resulting product uses a fresh, unified visual brand language to stand out in a market of indistinguishable products while also addressing functional considerations to reduce weight and keep out debris.
The new design has superior ergonomics. The new material for the lever consists of reinforced polymers which yields multiple benefits. It has a softer touch which improves traction, while its shape provides better leverage and therefore less strain for the workers. Additionally, it lightens the weight of the overall product for easier transport.
Charles Choi, founder and president of Choi Design, shared the following feedback from Flexco’s Arron Rosso, Senior Global Product Manager, “Operators appreciate the single handle operation, ability to skip over misdrives if they should occur, and the consistency of operation.”
Choi also noted that the design team was led by Lead Designer, Jacob Stanton, and rounding out the team were the following designers: Charles Choi, Mark Pavel, Aaron Rosso, Paul Micheli, Sam Ng and Nekheel Gajjar.
