Nexen Spring-engaged and Electric Rail Brakes

By Design World Staff | July 8, 2009

Vadnais Heights, MN‚—Nexen rail brakes are available in spring-engaged and electric models, delivering a secure hold in the broadest range of linear motion control applications. RB Series spring-engaged rail brakes use spring forces to secure the load in holding applications, providing superior response time and high stopping and holding force for e-stop and power-off situations. For fast response times, low backlash and on-board controller logic for electric holding on profile rails, RBE Series electric rail brakes deliver the required high performance and reliability. Both RB Series spring-engaged and RBE Series electric rail brakes configure to fit most profile guide rails including: NSK, SKF, INA, THK, IKO, HIWIN, and Star.

The RB Series spring-engaged rail brakes deliver high air-released holding forces, providing an ideal solution for stopping and holding in e-stop and power-off applications. Engineered for dependant redundant braking applications, the RB Series spring-engaged rail brakes help ensure operator safety. The brakes maintain an accurate position on the center of the guide rail, ensuring positive braking and holding in all axes, and by accurately holding this position, the rail brakes eliminate drive train backlash and elasticity. Manufactured for dependable performance, the RB Series spring-engaged rail brakes additionally offer:

* Brake geometry similar to system bearing cassettes allows simple installation

* Adjustable facing gap for optimum brake performance

* Field serviceable friction facing replacement; large friction facing contact area

* No lubrication or periodic maintenance required

Delivering a response time 54 percent faster than that of competing models, the RBE Series electric rail brakes use mechatronic technology to combine the latest electronic and mechanical components and ensure maximum power, density, efficiency and robustness. An onboard microcontroller receives and sends the engage/disengage signals to the drive components, eliminating the need for a space-consuming, externally mounted controller. Upon engagement, the microcontroller provides digital feedback, and power can be removed with the full holding force still remaining. When disengaging, the brake makes no rail contact and substantial opening of the shoes, eliminating system friction and allowing for minor variations in rail alignment, while still providing optimal performance. Since the brakes lock in place and maintain a precise hold, they are not recommended for e-stop or dynamic braking applications. Additional features of the RBE Series electric rail brakes include:

* Brake provides clamping feedback, via cable and on-board LED

* High holding force of the brake is used when the drive cannot perform the brake function on its own

* Brake provides stiffness to eliminate vibration in linear drive systems
