Standardized OPC Server for Industrial Device Servers

By Design World Staff | October 13, 2008

Cincinnati, Ohio — The Industrial Automation Group of Advantech introduces a standardized interface for industrial device servers, the OPC (OLE for process control) Server. An OPC server provides devices, such as an I/O device, to communicate with a wide range of HMI/SCADA software packages residing on a host. Any software system with OPC client capabilities can access the Advantech OPC server drivers.

Advantech OPC server drivers were developed using iCONICS’s OPC ToolWorX V3.2 with the following features
•Create OPC servers for any Microsoft operating system including Windows CE.

•Full source code version available.

•Low-cost DLL library version available.

•Intuitive OPC ToolWorX tutorial and online documentation.

•Produces OPC code which will pass OPC Foundation compliance tests.

•Compliant with the latest OPC Data Access 1.0, 2.04, 2.05 and 3.0 standards.

•Compliant with the latest OPC Alarm and Events 1.0 and 1.2 standards.

•Compliant with the latest OPC XML Data Access 1.0 standard.

•Wizards to create OPC Server Runtimes.

•Wizards to create GUI configurations for servers

•OPC wizards create projects for Microsoft Visual Studio and Visual Studio .NET.

•Productivity tools such as DataSpy and TraceWorX speed OPC development.

•Built-in OPC trace capability.

•Online configuration capability; add new signals and tags during runtime.

The OPC server drivers also consist of the following OLE components:

•The I/O driver maintains the driver’s channel, device, and datablock objects as well as performs all required functions for communicating with the process hardware and exposes the methods and properties to other applications.

•The power tool accesses the I/O server and lets you view and modify channel, device, and datablock properties.

There are four different devices available:

•PCLS-OPC/ADM for ADAM-4000, 5000/485, and 5000E series modules

•PCLS-OPC/MOD for Modbus/RTU compliant devices

•PCLS-OPC/MTP for Modbus/TCP compliant devices

•PCLS-OPC/A8K for ADAM-8000 series

Advantech OPC server drivers conform to OPC standards and provide immediate compatibility between Advantech I/O systems and a very wide range of application software designs; and is available for purchase at Advantech at 1-800-205-7940 or your regional Advantech authorized dealer for more information.
