With SpaceX ensconced in NASA’s commercial crew work, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been something of an underdog in the modern-day race to commercialize space travel. Of course, it’s all relative: Bezos’ company Blue Origin has already demonstrated the ability to drum up business based on its reusable rockets, even those that haven’t been built yet. On Wednesday, Blue Origin workers fired the BE-4 engine for three seconds, demonstrating they could be serious contenders when it comes to rockets for commercial and military jobs.
As Futurism points out, Blue Origin is also unique in that with most of the funding coming from Bezos himself instead of government partners, his launch company doesn’t cost taxpayers anything.
