Weidmuller Expands SAI Line

By Design World Staff | June 30, 2008

RICHMOND, VA- Weidmuller now offers a full line of Active Sensor Actuator Interfaces (SAI’s) for industrial applications that support Ethernet and Ethernet/IP protocols in addition to Profibus-DP, CANopen, Modbus and DeviceNet. These new SAI-Active Universal Modules provide users with greater levels of wiring flexibility for achieving modular and decentralized process control in automation applications. They are available in robust and environmentally rated IP 67 housings.

The new SAI’s feature standardized M8 and M12 connectors for quick and easy plug and play installation in harsh environments for up to sixteen digital I/Os. This allows for reduced installation costs and minimized machine downtime. Two M12 connectors provided for the fieldbus connection eliminate the need for a T-connector or splitter and assure a more secure connection.

Weidmuller offers three basic modules that can be easily configured to meet application requirements. These include a module with 16 digital inputs that can be configured into 8 inputs with one diagnostic channel each, to comply with DESINA (Distributed and Standardized Installation Technology for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Systems) standards; a module with 16 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs where each port can be configured as input or output, allowing the user to define, for example, 16 inputs or 15 inputs and 1 output; and a module that features 4 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs and 4 digital inputs with the following functions: 0 . . .20mA, 4 . . .20mA, 0 . . .10V and -10V – – -+10V.

Weidmuller’s SAI-Active Universal modules feature a uniquely illuminated configuration area with rotary switches to set the fieldbus addresses, and plug in cross-connections to bridge the electrical power supply. The illumination indicates that the module is on and operating in addition to providing better visibility of the rotary switches for easier field configuration. Innovative fiber optic arrows indicate the I/O status and illuminate the corresponding markers for better legibility in the field. Markers for each port, in addition to two additional markers per module, provide space for even long text such as bus addresses.

Weidmuller’s new SAI Active modules meet IP 67 protection standards, making them an ideal choice for harsh environmental applications, and they are cULus listed.
